Wireless costs are growing at a rate of 30% or more each year. But, most mobile environments are characterized by little to no standardization of wireless devices which causes overspending, potential tax penalties, inefficiencies, and lack of visibility and control. Establishing or updating a mobile policy is the first step to reigning in the chaos that leads to overspending.

When an effective mobile policy is combined with mobile provisioning technology, organizations can reduce mobile expenses, better support employees, improve efficiencies, mitigate liability for inappropriate use of devices, and improve security. For this month's Telesoft Edge, I've included some tips and solutions to help you better manage mobile expenses.

3 Tips for Developing an Effective Mobile Policy

Establishing a mobile policy or updating a policy that is 12 months old is the first step to reigning in the chaos that leads to operational inefficiencies. Mobility managers must gain executive support for the program before they attempt to implement a Mobile Policy.

Let's look at the 3 areas any organization needs to consider in order to effectively develop and manage their corporate mobile policy.

1. Analyze Corporate Culture: Determine how stringent the controls can be for accessories, software applications, ringtones, downloads, and the acceptable range of monthly spending.

2. Survey Job Roles: Identify who does what in your organization in order to determine mobile package needs and develop standards for eligibility.

3. Consult with Advisors: Figure out what special clauses need to be written in to the policy that may be specific to your organization. Examples include usage restrictions, device security, and IRS tax compliance requirements.
