Mary Meeker, a general partner at Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers, presented 213 slides with her annual Internet Trends report. Below are the top three most important trends for managers who are responsible for telecom and expense management.
1. Slowing Global Internet Usage…
Global Internet user growth from 2014 to 2015 was flat, and it was down from more than 15% growth in 2009. In developed countries, a high portion of people are already online. Growth must come from less developed countries, but it’s harder to acquire new Internet users due to the high cost of smartphones relative to people’s incomes. Enterprises have also reached a high saturation point for internet users. However, it’s important to recognize that consumption continues to grow as employees use more online applications that require additional bandwidth. In addition, employees are sending more images and using more video.
2. SmartPhone Growth Slips and iPhones May have Peaked …
IDC revised its forecast for 3.1% growth in 2016 due to the continued slowdown of smartphone sales in the U.S., Western Europe, and China. In Japan, shipments are expected to drop by 6.4% and Canada’s should shrink by 6.9%. 2015 might have been the peak for iPhones, and sales this year will probably drop by 2%. For enterprises, this means that employees will not need a new phone each year because the improvements are not that dramatic.
3. Re-Imagining Communication – Video, Images, & Messaging…
Images are growing in importance and use, while text, and specifically textual search, are fading. Meeker predicts that in five years, at least 50% of searches will be made through images or speech. Video and live feeds with Periscope, Facebook Live and other applications will grow.
This trend will increase bandwidth consumption and costs for fixed corporate networks and mobile services. Watching five minutes of Periscope broadcasts on a smartphone each day consumes nearly 50% of a 2 GB monthly data plan. The risks to those responsible for managing expenses were highlighted in an earlier post, Live Mobile Video Is the New Telecom Budget Buster.
